Growth/Decay was created in the spring of 2015. It was my debut solo show as an furniture and object maker. The show was at Craft House Gallery in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I did everything from designing the pieces, making them in my wood shop, hanging the work, designing the graphics and promoting the show. The show was a success as I sold a majority of the work.
Growth/Decay explores the story of place, process, relationships and time. In nature, seedlings and plants seem to grow, intuitively, without effort. Gems and diamonds form only under pressure. A forest fire causes a shift in stages, a disruption in the cycle. A new forest diverges from there. Moss grows on a fallen decaying log, demonstrating symbiotic relationships. Like rust or peeling paint, we are shown history. Microbiology constantly demonstrates agents of change. No matter where the needle is on the disc of time, growth and decay tell stories of action from the past, present and into the future.
